Miguel Bombarda - a psychiatric hospital

Open in 1848, Miguel Bombarda hospital was Portugal's first psychiatric hospital. The hospital occupied a large ground in the heart of the city, and once it's old buildings were no longer fit for patient care, they are now devoid and awaiting a new life.

Before this new life arrives (a major part of the hospital building will be demolished), the hospital's historic grounds are open to visitors. Aside the terrible personal experiences which must have taken place inside, there are "art brut" paintings & drawings displayed, there is also a display of medical and other objects related to the hospital. The buildings themselves are also unique, specially the bath houses, the office where Miguel Bombarda (a politician) was murdered, the round building where dangerous and aggressive patients were kept in reclusion (shown above, in the scan of the flier), which are open to visitors.

The hospital is well worth a visit, ask me for more details if you are interested in going there :-)
