One of the nice beaches in Lisbon is Praia das Maçãs, a beach close to Sintra. When guests at the apartment ask me for a beach where to go, I always inlude this beach in my suggestion list, not just because of the beach itself, but also of the way of getting there :-)
Streetcars more than 100 years old flow along secondary streets sided by beautiful vegetation. They cover the distance between Sintra and the beach (11km), making a nice, different experience out of it. From what I heard, the tram works from June 18th to October 31st, essencially on weekends. Tickets cost 2,00 €.
